What is Intrasite Gel Used For?

Intrasite gel may be applied to many different types of wounds, including leg ulcers, pressure sores, surgical wounds, and extravasation injuries. The intrasite gel is of particular value in the treatment of dry, sloughy, or necrotic wounds, promoting rapid debridement by facilitating rehydration and autolysis of dead tissue.

Intrasite Gel Composition

Active ingredients: Carboxymethylcellulose 2.3% and Propylene glycol 20%.

How Does Intrasite Gel Work?

Intrasite is a clear, water-based gel that includes 2.3% of a modified carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) polymer and 20% propylene glycol as a humectant and preservative. When applied to a wound, the dressing soaks up extra fluid, creating a moist environment on the wound surface without causing tissue softening.

How to use Intrasite Gel?

  • Administer Intrasite at a minimum depth of 5 mm within the wound, followed by the application of a sterile secondary dressing.
  • Dispose of any unused dressing. The choice of secondary dressing depends on the wound’s condition.
  • For high exudate, use an absorbent pad secured with tape or bandage; for light exudate, consider a less permeable option like perforated film absorbent dressing (e.g., Melolin or Telfa).
  • Very dry wounds may require an occlusive covering, such as Opsite Flexigrid.
  • For challenging areas like hands or feet, shape the dressing into a glove or boot using a plastic bag. In narrow wounds or sinuses, employ a syringe and quill for Intrasite gel application.

What are intrasite Gel Application Contraindications?

Intrasite gel is generally safe for wounds, but not great for really wet ones. It has propylene glycol, which might irritate some people. If someone reacts badly, stop using it. Use one container for one person, and throw away any leftover gel.

How often should wound dressings with Intrasite Gel be changed?

How often the dressing needs changing depends on the wound. For really wet or smelly wounds, change it every day. For dry ones, every other day is fine. Don’t keep the dressing on for more than three days. If there’s an infection, change Intrasite daily and start antibiotics as advised by the medical officer.
