What is Champix used for?
Champix is also called varenicline. It is a medicine that helps you stop smoking. It reduces the cravings for nicotine and helps with the withdrawal symptoms you get when you stop smoking. These symptoms include, the urge to smoke, feeling depressed or irritable, and difficulty in sleeping.
Champix is only available on prescription and can only be taken by adults aged 18 years and over. It comes as tablets.
Champix Dosage
The usual course of treatment lasts 12 weeks.
After 9 days of taking Champix, you’d notice that you crave fewer cigarettes each day. The amount of Champix in your body should be enough to help you stop smoking.
Champix Side Effects
Like all medicines, Champix can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common side effects of champix include;
- Headaches
- Sore or swollen (inflamed) nose and throat
- Nausea
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Dizziness
- Bad taste in your mouth
Champix Precautions
Do not use Champix if you have any of the following medical conditions:
- An allergy to Champix
- Kidney problems
- Mental health condition
- Heart issues
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Note that Champix will not make you stop smoking on its own. You still need self determination to break the smoking habit.
