What is Adenosine 3 mg/ml?
Adenosine 3 mg/ml solution for injection is used to stabilize the rhythm of the heart. In other words, it is used to normalize the heart to ensure that it produces the right rhythm. It helps in the conversion to sinus rhythm of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), including that associated with accessory bypass tracts (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome).
Adenosine may also be used to test the heart for coronary artery disease.
What type of drug is adenosine?
Adenosine is classified as an antiarrhythmic medication. It acts on receptors in the cardiac AV node, significantly slowing conduction time.
Does Adenosine stop your heart?
Though Adenosine can slow conduction through the atrioventricular node, it does not affect accessory pathways, which means it does not stop the heart. However, in certain cases, it can cause severe tachycardia that lead to a cardiac arrest.
What are the side effects of Adenosine 3 mg/ml?
Some of the known side effects of Adenosine include:
- Chest discomfort
- Difficult or labored breathing
- Headache
- Gastrointestinal discomfort
- Lightheadedness
- Dizziness
Adenosine 3 mg/ml Administration
Adenosine 3 mg/ml can be administered as a diagnostic or therapeutic dose.
As a diagnostic dose, it should be given to adults and elderly in the form of rapid intravenous injection only while for children, it should be given by rapid intravenous (IV) bolus injection into a vein or into an IV line. If administered into an IV line, it should be injected through as proximally as possible, followed by a rapid saline flush. If administered through a peripheral vein, a large bore cannula should be used instead.
Administered as a therapeutic dose, Adenosine 3 mg/ml is given to adults as 3mg given as a rapid intravenous bolus (over 2 seconds) during the initial dose.
It is not recommended that a patient is given additional or higher doses.
For children, Adenosine 3 mg/ml is expected to administered therapeutically as first bolus of 0.1mg/kg body weight (maximum dose of 6mg) while increments of 0.1mg/kg body weight as needed to achieve termination of supraventricular tachycardia (maximum dose of 12mg) is given subsequently.
