What is the difference between vitamin D and D3?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in some foods and supplements. Vitamin D, also known as cholecalciferol can be made by the body when the body is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is the only one of the 13 essential vitamins which the body can make on its own. The main role of vitamin D is to promote calcium absorption for bone mineralization and growth. It also helps in reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and metabolizing glucose.

Vitamin D3 is the form of vitamin D the body makes when sunlight strikes the skin and can be found in animal sources of food such as fatty fish, fish oil, liver, meats, and egg yolks.

Vitamin D2 is found in plant sources and is formed when certain plants are exposed to UV light from the sun. There are no meaningful differences between the two forms of vitamin D.
