Carbocisteine 375mg uses, dosage and information

What is Carbocisteine?

Carbocisteine is a mucolytic medication that helps you cough up phlegm by making it less thick or sticky. Carbocisteine helps in conditions that affect the lungs such as cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OPD). Carbocisteine is usually available in syrup or capsule form.

What should I know about using this medicine?

· Carbocisteine can be used by adults and children from age 2 and is used 3 to 4 times daily.

· Carbocisteine can be used with or without food.

· Carbocisteine is not suitable for people who have stomach ulcers

· Inform your doctor if you are planning to get pregnant or are pregnant

· Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using this medication

What is the recommended dosage of this medication?

Capsule: two 37 mg capsules, 3 times daily.

Syrup: 15 ml, taken 3 times daily.

Liquid: 1 sachet 3 times daily.

This dosage may be reduced by your doctor as your condition improves.

For children aged 2 – 4 years: 1.25 to 2.5 ml of syrup four times daily.

For children 5 – 11 years, 5 ml of syrup 3 times daily.

For children 12 – 17 years, 15 ml of syrup should be used 3 times a day.

What are the side effects of Carbocisteine?

Although, not every user will experience these effects, here are some side effects of carbocisteine:

· Diarrhea

· Nausea

· Vomiting

· Blood in vomit

· Black poo

· Contact your doctor if you notice any of these effects or they persist.

Can I use carbocisteine while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Use of carbocisteine during pregnancy is not recommended as there is insufficient data on safety, but it is generally safe during breastfeeding as the amount that is excreted is not likely to harm your baby.
