How do Lariam works?
Lariam works by interfering with the growth of malaria parasites in the red blood cells of the human body. Malaria is caused by several parasites of the Plasmodium family and they enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Lariam contains Mefloqunine which can be used to prevent an infection from one or more of this parasite.
Lariam Dosage
For Adults weighing over 45kg: Take one single Lariam tablet weekly. Start the treatment 10 days before arriving in the risk area, and then continue whilst there and for FOUR weeks on leaving the high-risk area.
A typical 2-week (14-day holiday) for an adult/child weighing over 45kg would therefore require 8 Lariam tablets. This breaks down to TWO tablets before, TWO whilst there and FOUR on return.
For Children: The dose of Lariam tablet to be taken WEEKLY depends on the weight of the child:
5-19.9kg (3mth-5yrs): Take a Quarter tablet
20-30.9kg (6-8 yrs): Take Half a tablet
31-45kg (9-14yrs): Take Three quarter tablet
The frequency of dosing for children is the same as the adult. Start Lariam 10 days before arrival and then continue weekly, whilst there and then for four weeks on return.
What are the side effects of taking Lariam tablet?
Common Side effects of taking Lariam tablet include;
Abnormal Dreams, Insomnia, Depression/Anxiety, Dizziness, Headaches, Visual Impairment, Vertigo, Nausea and Vomiting, Upset stomach, Diarrhoea, and Itchy Skin.
Lariam Precautions
Lariam should not be used by;
• People with a known allergy to Lariam or the active ingredient Mefloquine
• People with current or historic psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorder, depression, epilepsy, suicide attempts and schizophrenia
• People with a history of blackwater fever
• People with severe liver failure
• People with Ongoing use or use of Halofantrine in the last 15 weeks
• Do not operate machinery or drive a car while taking Lariam.
