Arteether injection is an anti-malaria medication. It is used in the treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum strains. Arteether is not used to prevent malaria or to treat severe malaria where the brain, lungs or kidneys have been affected. How does Arteether injection work?

Arteether injection work by producing harmful chemicals which are free radicals within the malarial parasite, thereby killing it.

Arteether Injection dosage

Arteether should be administered intramuscularly. Intramuscular injection of one ampoule, containing 150mg / Arteether should be given daily for 3 consecutive days (i.e. a total dose of 480 mg irrespective of body weight or 3mg per kg per day for a 50kg adult).

Is Arteether and Artemether injection the same?

Arteether is very similar to Artemether except that it differ only in the substitution of an ethyl for a methyl group, and that Arteether is suspended in sesame seed oil whereas Artemether is suspended usually in groundnut oil. Arteether dose regimens provisionally are also similar to those for Artemether.

When should Arteether injection not be used?

Arteether injection should not be used by;

  • Pregnant females below 16 years of age.
  • Anyone with known hypersensitivity to Arteether or sesame oil
  • It should not be used for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria
  • It should not be used in the treatment of vivax malaria

Arteether injection precautions

  • The use of Arteether injection is restricted to children and adolescents who are under the age of 16 years because of the possibility that it may likely have an effect on their heart.
  • Arteether injection must be administered only via the intramuscular route.
  • Arteether loading dose should be equally divided and injected anteriorly into both thighs with each subsequent dose injected into alternating thighs.
  • The use of Arteether for the treatment of severe malaria in patients with pre-existing renal or liver failure has not yet been studied.
  • Arteether injection should be administered with caution in the case of medicine induced fever, patients with heart disease and drug resistance.
