What is calcium chloride?

Calcium chloride is a white-colored, highly soluble, inorganic salt. It is generally used for de-icing and dust control. Calcium chloride is used in restoring electrolytes via intravenous fluid. 

Can calcium chloride harm the body?

Calcium chloride can be harmful in certain cases. If ingested, can lead to throat and mouth burns, excessive skin drying, low blood pressure, excess thirst, vomiting, and stomach pain. 

If inhaled, calcium chloride can irritate the respiratory tract. 

What is calcium chloride used to treat?

Calcium chloride is used in the treatment of hypocalcemic tetany (muscle spasm caused by abnormally low calcium) beta-blocker overdose, calcium channel blocker overdose, and hypermagnesemia. Calcium chloride is used in arrhythmias and cardiac resuscitation. 

What are the known side effects associated with using calcium chloride?

Some side effects of using calcium chloride include:

  • Hypomagnesia (low blood magnesium)
  • Hypophosphatemia (low blood phosphorus)
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium)
  • Nausea 
  • Vasodilation 
  • Tissue necrosis at the injection site
  • Weakness
  • Kidney stones 
  • Hot flushes 
  • Tingling 
  • Fainting and other unlisted side effects 

Calcium chloride dosage 

For treating hypocalcaemia or emergency treatments

  • 500 – 1000 mg IV for adults over 5 – 10 minutes 
  • 75 – 519 mg IV for children 
  • < 75 mg IV in infants

For treating emergent arrhythmias:

  • 500 – 1000 mg IV over 5 – 10 minutes for arrhythmias associated with hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, or hypermagnesemia 

For calcium channel blocker overdose 

  • 1 – 2 g IV infused over 10 – 20 minutes 

For Beta-blocker overdose 

  • 1000mg Iv bolus via central line
